Scoutcraft Winter Skills 

For all adults in Scouting, in all sections.

Saturday 3rd February, 0930 – 1700                                        £25

Morning: Three sessions on fire craft:


·          ·         Different types of Fire lays and methods of building fires.  Here we look at the best types of wood to produce sufficient heat with longer burn times. The best way to build a fire to get even the wettest wood to burn and produce a long lasting fire. (Mark Collinson, Lancashire Outdoor Adventures)


·         Knife skills and improving and producing effective feather sticks. Interactive session covering knife maintenance, knife safety and then using your knife skills to produce bomb proof feather sticks to get your fire started from a spark. (Mark Edlington-Booth, Waddecar)


·         Axe safety and Cutting tool maintenance. Interactive session covering different types of axes, how to use them safely and keep them in good condition and then participants will split wood down to kindling and using sissy sticks. (Mike Rushton, Tamarack Outdoors)


 The final morning session will see all candidates brought together and we will talk about and produce different varieties of Bannock bread which will then lead to lunchtime, where we will sample the different varieties along with the stews that will be cooking during the morning.



Afternoon: 3 sessions on keeping warm and dry:    

  Sleeping systems and how to stay warm in the evenings. Not just a sleeping bag and wearing all your clothes.  This session will teach hacks used by professionals to keep warm in inexpensive off the shelf sleeping systems. You’ll be able to wear very little and still be as warm as toast.   (Mark Edlington-Booth, Waddecar)


Clothing systems, how to use layers to adapt to different weather conditions. Mike will be covering (literally) the most efficient layering systems, how start cold - warm up system is better than putting big and bulky items on.  How different layers behave when used in the right circumstances and the importance of using hats and gloves even in milder conditions.  The best way to dress for all British weather conditions. (Mike Rushton, Tamarack Outdoors)


 Camp craft, setting up camp to maximise shelter for inclement weather and heat retention. How to get your group dry and warm and keep them that way.  The best way to configure a camp to protect from the weather. (Mark Collinson, Lancashire Outdoor Adventures)

Scoutcraft Summer Skills

We benefit from 4 clear seasons in the UK, each bringing its own benefits. Discover what nature supplies us in the summer months and how to make the most of it.

Get back to basics and get to grips with nature:

Topics include shelter building, cooking, bushcraft and hammocking.


Make a weekend of it: this Scoutcraft ticket allows full Scout members to camp over for FREE.

Following the tremendous success of the Leaders Gathering 2017, we will again be hosting

a weekend of fantastic workshops run by amazing people.

Tips on how to get the most from Waddecar’s activities, exploring new scouting skills, and developing your personal interests, there is something for everyone.  This is a fun weekend with time to meet new people and relax at the bar in the evenings.

Open to all Scout Association members over 18.


Full weekend £35, add catering for £10. Saturday only £25.
